Bouzidi, Bellamy, Sewing and Munro Lead Way at 2025 AARP Open
Bouzidi, Bellamy highlight AARP Champions and Masters Divisions; Sewing and Munro's pro double golds lead way at 2025 AARP Open in Fort Lauderdale
The Association of Pickleball Players (APP) hosted the latest edition of the world’s first and world’s best pickleball tour in Fort Lauderdale, concluding with five epic Championship Sunday matches at the 2025 AARP Open. The APP’s global headquarters, The Fort, welcomed capacity crowds for all the action as its champions were crowned.
The 2025 AARP Open placed a special spotlight on the AARP Champions (50+) and Masters (60+) Pro Divisions, plus showcased a large field of amateur players of all ages and skill levels from across the country. Pro players battled for hardware and prize money, and all amateur medalists earned an APP Passport guaranteeing pre-registration for the season-ending 2025 APP Tour Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
AARP Champions Pro Action
In AARP Champions Division (50+) competition in Fort Lauderdale, Youssef Bouzidi secured two gold medals – one as men’s singles champion and the other alongside Patrick Cote for men’s doubles gold. Angela Simon and Lee Whitwell took home another women’s doubles title, Karin Ptaszek-Kochis won her fourth women’s singles gold medal of 2025, and Nathalie Bagby and Mircea Morariu teamed up for mixed doubles gold.
AARP Masters Pro Action
In AARP Masters Division (60+) action, Beth Bellamy and Anna Shirley won their fourth women’s doubles title as a duo, Todd Murphy and Vincent Van Patten won the men’s doubles title, Heather Iffert and Mark Wilder earned mixed doubles gold, and Scott Greenberg heads home with the men’s singles gold medal.
In the APP Tour pro ranks, Miami native Sofia Sewing earned two gold medals – one in women’s pro doubles alongside fellow South Floridian Shelby Bates, and the other in women’s pro singles. Jack Munro swept the doubles matches with two golds – one in men’s pro doubles with Will Howells and the other in mixed pro doubles alongside Megan Fudge. Ammar Wazir rounded out the gold medalists with his third consecutive men’s pro singles title.
Women’s Pro Singles
The championship slate began with women’s pro singles, with two-time defending champion and South Florida native Sofia Sewing taking on fellow Floridian Bobbi Oshiro. Sewing, a six-time APP Tour women’s singles champion in 2025, came out firing and won game one 15-7. Oshiro responded with resilience, grinding out a win in game two, 16-14. From there, Sewing’s singles prowess was on full display, winning 15-6 to clinch her seventh women’s singles title of the season.
“Bobbi’s an amazing player,” Sewing said following the win. “We’ve had a long weekend, a lot of matches for both of us, so I just wanted to come in here and stay positive and play my game”
Australia native Seone Mendez won the women’s pro singles bronze medal for her first career APP Tour medal.
Men's Pro Singles
In a rematch from the APP Great Lakes Open back in August, Ammar Wazir met Dusty Boyer in the men’s pro singles gold medal match. The two finalists traded blows, with Boyer taking game one 16-14 and Wazir responding in game two, 17-15. Wazir burst out of the gate in game three with an 8-0 lead before cruising to victory, 15-4, to secure his third consecutive APP Tour men’s singles title.
Wazir’s powerful serve proved key to his victory, as he commented: “I was just telling myself ‘go for broke’. I knew if I could hit deeper serves, I was going to get some errors [from Boyer], and that’s what happened.”
John Cangelosi of Venice, Fla. earned the men’s pro singles bronze medal, his first APP Tour medal of 2025.
Men's Pro Doubles
The men’s pro doubles final followed suit on championship court. Will Howells and Jack Munro, winners of six titles together in 2025, had their eyes set on number seven as they faced Ryler DeHeart and Kyle Koszuta. Howells and Munro showed why they’re the top men’s doubles pair on tour once again, as they won a tight game one 11-9 and followed up 11-5 in game two to secure the gold.
“They’re legit,” Munro said of their opponents. “Kyle is always one step ahead, and Ryler has the ability to be streaky and he was on. But thankfully, we pulled through.”
“We played a complete match,” Howells added. “They got an early lead, but then we played super disciplined after that and we finished it off.”
Richard Livornese, Jr. and Tanner Tomassi won the men’s pro doubles bronze medals in Fort Lauderdale.
Women's Pro Doubles
The South Florida duo of Shelby Bates and Sofia Sewing took the court for the women’s pro doubles final against No. 2 seeds Allison Harris and Christine Maddox. Bates and Sewing had medaled in two straight events, earning gold at the APP Chicago Open and silver at the APP Women’s Open presented by The James, and took care of business for the third consecutive time as they took down Harris and Maddox, 11-4 and 11-7 for the gold.
“We wanted to come in here, from the start, and be as energetic and loud and positive as we could,” Sewing said. “I’m so proud of us, happy to get another gold with Shelby.”
Bates added: “Congratulations to Christine and Allison for a great tournament, but also thank you to the fans, sponsors, The Fort, and my team.”
Megan Fudge and Amanda Hendry earned the women’s pro doubles bronze medals.
Mixed Pro Doubles
In a heavyweight battle between the top two seeds, Megan Fudge and Jack Munro faced off against Bobbi Oshiro and Will Howells in the mixed pro doubles final. The four finalists put on a show for the Fort Lauderdale crowd with three exhilarating games. Game one went 11-7 in favor of Fudge and Munro, while Oshiro and Howells stormed back with an 11-3 win in game two. The third game could have swung either direction, but Fudge and Munro ultimately pulled away, 11-9, to clinch their fourth mixed doubles title together of the season.
“I gave Jack the green light to do anything he wants to do, and that’s always dangerous, but we played really good pickleball and scrapped it out,” Fudge said.
Sofia Sewing and Casey Diamond took home the mixed pro doubles bronze medals.
