University of Delaware Stuns a Deep Field
With one collegiate qualifier left, here's how the competition is shaping up
After Saturday's pool play it seemed as if things were shaping up to be a dominant weekend by one of the top teams in the country, the University of Virginia Cavaliers. They finished pool play holding the top 3 seeds, showing no signs of letting up, and proving why they are one of the most complete teams in the country.
Yet it turned out to be a different story on Sunday as the #7 seed Blue Hens from the University of Delaware made a huge run and knocked off the #2 seed UVA 2 team (3-0) in the quarterfinals, then took out the #3 seed UVA 3 team (3-1) in the semifinals which set up a match with the top seeded UVA 1 team in the finals. The finals went to a tiebreaker singles match and the Blue Hens completed the sweep of three of the UVA teams by a score of 21-14 in the tiebreaker! Rounding out the top four teams along with UD, UVA1 and UVA3 was the Highlanders from the University of Radford.
Other notable teams from the weekend were the University of Virginia 2 team that finished 14-2, the Hawkeyes from the University of Iowa that went 13-3 and the UConn 1 team that finished up 11-5. All three of these teams are sitting pretty for an at-large bid for the APP Selkirk Collegiate National Championships in March with only one more regional to go in Indiana this coming weekend.
